The real cost of living in Vietnam: a reality check
8 min read Β· Updated 2026-06-01
Why '$800 a month' videos mislead, what a comfortable Western standard actually costs by city, and the budget lines newcomers forget.
Three very different budgets
Vietnam supports three genuinely different lifestyles. A local-style budget β Vietnamese food, a modest room, a motorbike β is real at $700β900 a month. A comfortable standard β modern one-bedroom, mixed local and Western food, proper health insurance β runs roughly $1,300β1,700 in Da Nang and $1,600β2,100 in the big cities. Premium expat living, in Thao Dien compounds with international schools, can absolutely reach Western prices.
Most 'I live on $800' content quietly assumes the first budget and no insurance. Our calculator prices the second and third honestly, for your household size.

The lines newcomers forget
Health insurance is the big one: an international-grade policy for a healthy 40-year-old runs $80β150 a month and rises with age β budget it, because Vietnamese public hospitals are not where you want a surprise. Add visa runs or business-visa services, flights home, air-conditioning-heavy summer power bills and the Western-groceries premium (imported cheese is a luxury good).
None of these break the case for Vietnam β the savings are usually still dramatic β but they're the difference between a budget that survives contact with reality and one that doesn't.
City choice moves the needle most
The same lifestyle costs meaningfully different amounts across Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi at the top, Da Nang and Nha Trang in the comfortable middle, Hoi An, Da Lat and Vung Tau at the gentle end. Housing drives the gap β food and transport are cheap everywhere.
Pick the city for the life you want first, then check the numbers. Our city pages give benchmarks for each, and the calculator personalises them in two minutes.
